Pier to Pine Ocean Swim: Make Easter 2026 an Unforgettable Norfolk Island Adventure

Norfolk Island is known for its dramatic coastline, crystal-clear lagoons and rich cultural heritage, but in April 2026, it will make history by hosting its first-ever major ocean swimming event. The Pier to Pine Ocean Swim, taking place from 10 to 12 April 2026, is set to become one of the South Pacific’s most scenic and welcoming open-water swim experiences.

Held in the sheltered turquoise waters of Emily Bay and Slaughter Bay, within the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kingston area, Pier to Pine offers swimmers the rare opportunity to glide safely inside the reef while surrounded by convict-era ruins, towering Norfolk Island pines and one of the most beautiful natural settings on earth.

Whether you’re a seasoned ocean swimmer, a first-timer, or travelling as a supporter, this event is the perfect reason to plan an Easter escape, and Norfolk Island Travel Co. is here to help you make the most of it.

What Is the Pier to Pine Ocean Swim?

The Pier to Pine Ocean Swim is Norfolk Island’s premier new ocean swimming event, created to celebrate community, connection and a shared love of the ocean. Designed with inclusivity in mind, the event offers multiple swim distances and both competitive and social categories, making it accessible for swimmers of all ages and abilities.

All swims take place inside the reef in the calm, protected waters of Emily Bay, passing through the iconic ‘channel’, a naturally formed opening in the reef that has been used by islanders for generations.

The event is also carefully scheduled to allow swimmers and their families to enjoy Norfolk Island beyond race day, with a relaxed three-day Easter weekend itinerary that blends sport, culture and island hospitality.

Swim Events: Something for Every Ability

Pier to Pine has been thoughtfully designed so everyone can take part, from children dipping their toes into ocean swimming to experienced athletes chasing a longer challenge.

Around the Raft – 200m

A fun, family-friendly swim ideal for kids, first-timers and those wanting a relaxed introduction to open-water swimming. The short course stays close to shore and is a crowd favourite for spectators.

Age categories:
8 & under | 9–13 | 14–17 | 18+

The Channel – 600m

A fast and scenic swim starting at Slaughter Bay and finishing in Emily Bay, passing through the heart of the lagoon. Perfect for developing swimmers or those wanting a shorter, dynamic course.

Pier to Pine – 1.2km

The signature event of the weekend. Swimmers head from Emily Bay out towards the historic pier before returning to shore near the iconic lone pine. A truly memorable swim through history and natural beauty.

Pier to Pine + Raft – 2.5km

The ultimate challenge. Combining the Pier to Pine course with an additional loop around the raft, this is designed for confident ocean swimmers seeking a longer distance.

Age categories for 600m, 1.2km & 2.5km swims:
11–12 | 13–14 | 15–17 | 18–29 | 30–39 | 40–49 | 50–59 | 60+

All swims offer competitive and social categories, with snorkels and fins permitted in the social category for enjoyment.
